Marine Sector
As the number of ships on our world’s oceans grows, so also does the noise that their engines and propellers, among other things, make. For whales especially, which communicate with each other in the dark depths of the ocean exclusively by sound, this development is proving fatal. These highly sensitive giants of the sea use clicking sounds and whale music to generate an echo that helps them to find their way around and communicate with each other. The noises of the ships can affect the quality and range of the whales’ signals, causing the creatures to become stranded or to collide with ships. MAN Diesel & Turbo is working hard to stop this: for years, we have been producing quieter marine engines that are positioned on elastic rubber, making them quieter still. This is particularly practicable for four-stroke engines. The larger, slow-running two-stroke engines produce significantly less underwater noise anyway.
